The origins of the marathon trace back to ancient Greece and the legendary run of the soldier Pheidippides. According to historical accounts, in 490 BCE, after the Greeks defeated the Persians in the Battle of Marathon, Pheidippides ran approximately 40 km from the battlefield to Athens to announce the victory. Upon delivering the message, he collapsed and died from exhaustion. This historic run inspired the modern marathon race. When the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896, the marathon was included as a tribute to Pheidippides' legendary journey. The initial marathon distance was about 40 kilometers (24.85 miles), roughly the distance from Marathon to Athens. The marathon remains a symbol of endurance and perseverance, reflecting the spirit of Pheidippides' historic run and its enduring legacy in athletic competition.
