Athene noctua is often classified as a sedentary species, as it tends to remain close to its birthplace for life. But even so, its flying capabilities are remarkable: little owls can soar up to 30 m in the air, and more. They also frequently groom their feathers (every 2 to 3 days) and take dust or sand baths. To hide, A. noctua positions itself in a way that conceals all light-colored feathers and blends in with the environment. Plus, little owls are able to close their eyes by raising their lower eyelids. Mutual preening between mates and siblings has also been observed, and the species is active primarily during dusk and dawn.
