Karagiozis is an iconic character of Greek folklore, harking from the ancient art of Turkish shadow puppetry. Some believe that these shows were played in the 11th century on the island of Java, and eventually made their way to the Ottoman Empire. His name is from Greek Καραγκιόζης, meaning 'dark eye', and he was popularity in mainland Greece during the 19th century, thanks to the work of the founder of modern Greek shadow theater, Dimitrios Sardounis, a.k.a. Mimaros. Karagiozis resides in a small cottage with his wife Aglaia and their three sons, during the Ottoman Empire's rule. In the scene, his cottage lies on the left, and the Sultan's Saray, on the right. The Greek Karagiozis stands for liberty and strength of the people against the dynastic rule.
