Socrates (c. 470 bce - 399 bce) was an iconic Greek philosopher whose ideas and  lifestyle had a great impact on philosophy - ancient and modern. He wrote nothing, so knowledge of his character & teachings come mostly from Plato's dialogues, Xenophon's Memorabilia, & Aristotle's texts. During the Peloponnesian War, he was a brave soldier and later a council member. He tried to help people lead an examined life through conversations and questions. This technique, known as the "Socratic Method," displayed his interlocutor's lack of knowledge on a subject. He believed wisdom begins with recognizing one's ignorance, an unexamined life is not worth living, virtue is all that matters, and a good person can never suffer. Plato, Alcibiades, and Critias were his students, but he was accused of impiety and corrupting the youth. Thus, he was condemned to death by poison. This artwork features Socrates, immortalized in front of the Athens National Academy building by Italian master Piccarelli in the 19th century.
