Pigeon houses, dovecotes, have been a staple of Tinian life for centuries; dating back to at least the Venetian period (1207-1715). In the agreement of 1726, it was confirmed that bird and manure were exported from the Greek isle. Venetians are credited with building the first structures and introducing bird breeding, which required a secure space, plenty of room to fly and nearby water source. These two-storey houses offer a bottom storeroom and a top level for birds to call home. Tinian artisans took the slate to the next level, adorning the houses with masterpieces -- intricate floral designs, sunbursts and personalized initials. Guarded by Venetian lords, ownership transferred to Tinian landowners after the Ottoman occupation in 1715.
