Displayed today in the Archeological Museum of Delphi, this iconic pair of Archaic marble statues, representing Cleobis and Biton of Argos, are legendary symbols of brotherly love and heroism. Created by Polymedes of Argos and dedicated to Apollo by the Argives, these sculptures capture the pure beauty of 6th century BC Greek art. As told by Herodotus, when their oxen were delayed, the two brothers gladly pulled their mother's cart to the temple of Hera, where she thanked the goddess by asking for a priceless reward - peaceful death in their sleep.
